Mario Casella

I’m a journalist and a mountain guide. I worked full time as a journalist and producing current affairs documentaries for the Swiss public TV (RSI) from 1985. From 1997 to 2000 I was living in Washigton DC (USA) and was covering all the US as TV correspondent for RSI.

Since 2007 I work just part time for the same Broadcaster and I’m producing documentaires as an indipendent. Worth of mention is my documentary “Siachen – a war for ice”, the first film, ever, to document from both sides the 20-year war between India and Pakistan over the control of the Siachen Glacier, in the heart of the Himalayas. The documentary, a production with my friend and documentary maker Fulvio Mariani, has won several awards and nominations. My latest documentaries are the awarded “Grozny Dreaming”, “Caucasus: crossing a mountain range between two seas with a pair of skis” (selected in many Mountain Film Festivals” – 2010) and the Series “The Silk Snow” (the ski traverse of the mountains from Turkey to China along the Old Silk Snow – available on VOD here). For details about all the Films and Awards click here. I’m regularly invited as a jury member of different international Mountain Film Festivals (Trento, Graz, Lessinia-Verona, Tegernsee, Les Diablerets, Kathmandu).

My book “Cime di guerra” (Peaks of war) about an expedition on Gasherbrum IV (7920 m) is also translated in French and published by Filigranowa (2010). In 2010 I published « Nero-bianco-nero » a book on the History and the mountains of the Caucasus area (Award « Leggimontagna 2011 » in Italy and ITAS Award 2013 for the best Mountain Book of 2011-2012 published in Italy). The book is also translated in German by AS Verlag (Zürich). In 2017 it was published again in italian by the popular newspapers « Corriere della Sera » and « Gazzetta dello Sport ». See also books. The same year I published the book « Il peso delle ombre » – about fake and true news in mountain climbing history (Special Mention of the Jury of ITAS Award 2018 and second place at the Leggimontagna Award 2018). This book is now  translated in German by AS Verlag and in French by Slatkine Edition, Geneva The book is still waiting for an English translation… (more Infos in English about the book and Foreign Rights  here ).

Beside these different activities I really like also to work as a mountain guide in the Alps and around the world. I climbed many major peaks around the planet (Cho Oyu, 8201 m without oxigen, Nevado Huascaran-Peru 6768 m, Mount McKinley Messner Route, 6125 m Alaska, Pic Lenin 7134 m, Kirgyzistan, Muztaghata with skis 7645 m, China, Elbrous 5642 Caucasus Russia, Damavand 5671 m, with skis, Iran, Mount Ararat with skis 5137 m, Turkey).

During two winters (2018/2019) I crossed with the skis the long Carpathian mountain chain (Slovakia, Poland, Ukraine and Romania): an exciting adventure which is the core of my new book: “Oltre Dracula. Un cammino invernale nei Carpazi” (Cortina Mountain Book Award 2019 for the best Mountain book of the year)

I speak fluently Italian, German, French and English.

In September 2018 I was rewarded with the “Albert Mountain Award” for my books and documentaries with Fulvio Mariani.
